Slovakia is a small country but in spite of this fact it has a big natural treasure, as well as lots of impressive castles!

The place where I live is called Slovakia. It is the country in the middle of Europe-it is like a heart of the continent.

Slovakia is a small country but in spite of this fact it has a big natural treasure. There are many sources of mineral water which is very important for health and are held especially in a health-resorts. People are cured there or they only rest. The Slovaks spend weekends and vacations in the High Tatras. They ski there in the winter and make trips in summer. Several months ago there was a gale which destroyed the High Tatras. It blew out a great number of trees. This event was horrible for us. Our mountains now do not look like before the catastrophe.

We strived for our independence and the Slovak suffered from oppression. But Slovakia has been transformed and step by step the life here is better.

Our ancestors gave us historical castles and chateaux. Their architecture and equipment is really interesting You wonder how people could build such fabulous constructions without the help of modern machinery.

I must mention caves too. The most famous are Demänovska , Gombasecka , Aragonitova, Dobsinska cave or Domica. They hide beautiful formations of ice.

Centres of Slovak towns are decorated with old houses of the nobility and now there are shops, restaurants or confectioneries.

Slovakia has nothing monumental but it is worth to visit us. If you come here, you will not regret. I think it´s a perfect place for vacations.

A castle in Slovakia

One of most beautiful historic reservations in the Czech Republic is Ceský Krumlov.

By Bára Dostálová - CZ

For the several centuries in which the Rozmberks ruled a great part of what is now Southern Bohemia, Ceský Krumlov was the administrative and economic centre. The unique character of its architectonic wealth is magnified by the charming countryside of the Sumava foothills.

The castle was built over a bend in the River Vltava. Its oldest part dates from the second half of the 13th century while the presentday appearance is mainly Renaissance. A dominant feature is the Early Gothic round tower. A general view of Ceský Krumlov gives an idea of the basic features of our oldest towns which assumed an advantageous position on a protected spur of land on the banks of a river or at an elevated point where trading routes crossed.
